posthumanist conversations in utrecht
what is the philosophy of the posthumanists? (asking for a friend…)
is initiated by Johannes Klabbers, a recovering academic and writer (I Am Here, Scribe UK 2016) who completed a practice based PhD in performance, video, installation and sound art in Australia in 2003. He is a posthumanist therapist and geestelijk verzorger who lives and works in Utrecht. More information : johannesk.com
…I am interested in collaboratively and speculatively practising posthumanism as a ‘politico-poetical tool.’ This involves exploring how a posthumanist approach might in/form a praxis of both self-care and care of others which is local, non-profit, ethical, politically aware and affirmative. The idea is to de-centre the self and the human to facilitate and/or enable new subjectivities…
is a series of ten monthly group meetings of people interested in how a posthumanist praxis could evolve in everyday life (with the possibility of follow up one-to-one conversations with interested participants).
The conversation is open and accessible to the widest possible range of people, including those who know nothing about philosophy or critical theory, let alone posthumanism. It is not intended to be an extension of academic study of these theories, but will focus on how these theories might be applied in daily life.
The series complements the ReadingRoom initiated by Terra Critica and co-hosted by Casco (which will recommence in 2018 after a small break this year). Like the ReadingRoom we will practice forms of conversation, collective thinking and engagement in an affirmative manner and environment. Our conversations will focus on praxis, giving form to theory in daily life, and considering whether and how theory is useful/helpful in everyday life. What can it do? How can it make a difference?
…My primary focus since leaving academia and the art world (!) has been on practice/s - or praxis. That is not to say I am not interested in theory, on the contrary, but I want to work with people who are interested in the project of becoming posthuman, people who want to put into practice different aspects of, let’s call it for convenience sake, posthumanist theory. What is needed to make that possible? A kind of variation on consciousness raising groups…?
We meet once a month with each meeting having a theme suggested by the participants.
The theme for the second meeting was Loneliness.
The theme for the first meeting was Transformation.
